Hi David:
I'm sorry to hear about your father. Im surprised he was only on a few episodes of the Andy Griffith Show. Most of my fond memories of the Andy Griffith Show have Ernest T in them. What a funny comedian he was with alot of talent! God Bless you and your family on your GREAT loss. Take Care....

Dear Mr. Morris,
I just now found out from a work associate of the passing of your father Howard. Even though he had a full life and is in a better place and all the rest, he is no doubt sadly missed by you and his lucky family. I can't begin to tell you how much sheer, pure unfettered joy i have gotten from the 5 episodes featuring the great Ernest T. Bass. When checking out the "Andy " show on TV Land, if I see it is 1 of the 5 with Ernest, especially 1 of his gatherings with the equally fun and funny Darlin' family and the music from Heaven of the Dillards, I stop whatever I am doing and take it in. Classic, pure, comedy. TV excellence only matched by the likes of the Honeymooners, Dick Van d**e, Lucy and in some instances Seinfeld. As great as all of Ernest T's appearances in Mayberry, especially the 1 where he is trying to win Charlene Darlin's heart by wooing her with his ways, he equals his roles there in the Van d**e episode as Mr. Huldecker the art estiamtor who discloses to Rob and Laura the contents of the painting they just purchased. Another classic comedy turn, and more evidence of this very creative man's comic ability. Recall: when asked by Rob what he will need to do his job, Huldecker replies, " a rag, some turpentine, and about this much wine." Rob:" What's the wine for ?" Huldecker: (indignantly surprised) "To drink of course!"
May sound corny, but I've always imagined heaven as a lot like Mayberry. I'm in no hurry to get there, but at least it's true as promised...."We ain't seen the last of Ernest T. Bass!"

Thank you Mr. Morris. Rest in Peace. Hey, Ernest T. Fell free to throw a rock down here anytime ya'all feel like it!

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts and wishes for  Dad.  I'm Devra, Howards youngest daughter.  My brother David told me about all the wonderful messages we were getting on Dads site and I'm overwhelmed at the number of people that have written with so many kind words.  I know that our Dad would have been so touched by all of this. He was a very sensitive person and I can just picture his face and response to all of this. I loved my Dad, we had so many great times together and he taught me so much. I was lucky to go to the set of Mayberry with him when I was younger and meet everyone there. What a great expierences and  cherished memories I have going to work with Dad and so many wonderful memories of our times together. Thanks again for letting us know your thoughts & feelings.  ililani2u@aol

My deepest sympathy for the family!  I just wanted to say that I dont think my family and I ever got so much enjoyment from a person than Mr. Morris!  Our family knows him best through his character of Ernest T. Bass.  He left a lasting impressions in everyone's hearts!  He left this world now, but not before making everyone laugh and smile!  That is a wonderful legacy!  God has called you home to bring more laughter there!

David and Family,

Hi again! Sorry for the misspelling when referring to Ernest T. Bass. But I have the fondest memeory of Howard when he tries to steal Charlene Darling Wash at her wedding, when he steals the bride he doesn't realize that Barney is under the veil, and then he says, "Charlene say'll you'll be mine", and then Barney lifts the veil and Ernest rubs his eyes. Then Barney says, "I wouldn't marry you if you the last man on earth." That is just so funny. Then another one is where Ernest throws a rock in the jail house window and breaks it. When they get the replacement Ernest comes up pretends to throw a rock and then Barney tells him to stop that and swings his gun into the new window beaking it. Then Ernest takes off running and gets back behind bars with the doors locked. Andy and Barney dumb founded at how Ernest get in and out with the door locked.

Rest In Peace Howard!

To the Morris kids: Your Dad was a-ok!  I've seen a lot of his film work over the years and he sure is on the uppermost tier of the talented ones.  The personal pictures of the family and him were pretty cool!  My favorite one was the formal one of him in his military uniform.  Handsome cuss.   Take care now Morris kids.   Sincerely, K. Dear Morris Family and Fellow Fans

Was very saddened, naturally, to hear of Howard Morris’ passing.  He was truly unique and one of the greats.

I have a modest “Jerry’s Deli” story to pass along.   I guess it was about two years ago,  my wife and I happened to be at Jerry’s when Howard was there, kibitzing with Johnny Dark and a blonde companion.  Instantly recognizing Howard, I hipped my wife to the fact that he was seated a few tables away.  I put considerable effort into trying not to stare, but before long Howard clearly noticed that we noticed him.  The trio walked by our table on the way out, at which time I gave Howard a little wave and said something like “How’re ya doin’, Uncle Goofy?”  Howard immediately responded, “It’s GOOPY!”  and then sort of mockingly wagged his finger at me and said “If you’re gonna do it, DO IT RIGHT!”, shook my outstretched hand and turned and left.  Naturally, I was thrilled.

We’ve run into a number of celebs since we moved here a few years ago.  Every once in a while, we recall the names we’ve encountered.  For us, the Great Howard Morris is always at the very top of the list.  We’ll be at the service tomorrow to pay our heartfelt respects.

Our sympathy to the Morris family.  I’m hoping Mr. Morris left this earth as a satisfied man, aware of his impact and wonderful contributions to the world.

There are certain things in one's life that will always bring back memories of childhood, laughter and learning what entertainment was all about. The Andy Griffith Show is one of those things for me and for as far back as I can recall, the character of Ernest T. Bass was always one of my favorites. The lasting impression and identity that Howard Morris brought to Mayberry with those treasured few appearances speaks of the entertainment talent that he truly was. I have a daughter who is currently entering her senior year at the University of San Francisco, she is a performing arts major. She called to share this news with me; she, her brother and sister learned about Ernest T from an early age. God's Blessings to you and your family.

David, Kim, Devra and Gabrielle;

I'm so sorry about your father.  I was so taken aback when I read the news about his passing.  What a wonderful, kind and sweet man he was, so full of love and talent.  He brought so much joy to so many people throughout the decades.  I too am very sad that he's no longer with us.  I grew up with many of the cartoons he provided voices for.  He was so funny.  He always brought a smile to my face.  I have all three volumes of Garfield and Friends on DVD and I really enjoy all the voices he did on that show.  I especially love his character Wade Duck.  I know that whenever I watch that show I will think of your wonderful father.  All of us fans will miss him so much. I'm sure that he will continue to bring a lot of joy to people around the world through all the wonderful things he's done.

I will continue to keep you and all your family in my thoughts and prayers, and may God comfort you at this very sad time of loss.  I know that your father will always be with you in all your hearts.

It's me it's me.  The happy nut will always live on in TV.  I wish to extend my sympathy to the family of Howard Morris.  He was one of the more memorable characters on Andy.  I am sure he is throwing rocks in heaven now. Embarrassed

Boy, where to start?

I have so much respect for people who make us smile and laugh, and Howard was certainly that.

He was so good in innumerable movies/shows, but I, as so many, recall him first as Ernest T. Bass.  The guy breaks me up just with a reaction or a look -- stuff you can't script -- to say nothing of all his classic lines.  For a character that only appeared in 5 eps, Ernest T. (by the way, I've read that the "T" was the middle initial of one of Andy's fave bandleaders) is eminently quotable.

Nary a day goes by when I don't utter an Ernest T-ism: "My mother figure", "Old Man Kelsey's Ocean!", "I wanna read my sen-tence!"

Your father leaves an amazing legacy and that is smiles, smiles that will continue long after his death and probably long after all of ours.  And that's a pretty cool thing indeed.

I just wanted to say that I am sure I speak for many, many people when I say, a character like Ernest T. stuck with you so much...it seemed like Mr. Morris did dozens of episodes. As fans, I don't think we ever got enough of him.

Again, I offer my prayers. Your father touched millions.
