One of coolest memories I will ever have since I moved to L.A. will be of one particular Sat. morning at Solley's Deli
just around the corner from where I live. It has a become something of a tradition to have Sat. morning breakfast with a couple of my friends and it was not unusual to see Howard having breakfast with his group of friends which included Gary Owens of Laugh In and other show business pals.
Because of this frequency we would usually greet them and briefly say hello depending on who was coming or going.
One morning, I found myself standing outside of Solleys waiting for my friends at the same time Howard was waiting for his friends. He was just sitting very calmly on one of the benches appearing to enjoy the nice weather.
I wanted to ask him so many things, but didn't want to be an annoying fan. Somehow I stuck up a casual conversation with him and he couldn't have been more kind. It seemed like he really appreciated the small talk. Almost like one of those Andy and Barney moments where they are both just kind of standing around talking and going " Yeah,...yeah.."
I'll never forget it.
Howard Morris was a comic genuis. The likes of which are all too rare.
Rest in peace Mr. Morris. You too Ernest T.

I was so sorry to hear about your Dad. I watched him as Ernest T. Bass when I was growing up, and I still watch today. He will be missed. Now, my grandson & I watch and just laughs so hard. I'm sure your Dad would like to know he still puts smiles on people's faces.

David,
I just had to find this site that Howie told me about so long ago and I thought this was the best time that I can come here and just let you know how much your dad ment to me. I was so devasted when I was told he passed on. I so much enjoyed all the time Howie and I spent over the years whether it was looking for houses, going for breakfast, going to the movies or taking him to the doctors. He ment the world to me and shared so much of his past with me. I have memories that only the two of us shared and I am so grateful for that.
I missed him so much the last few months and would call him to just let him know I was here for him if he wanted to go out even if I had to leave messages.
David, I loved him so much and I will miss him so. What makes me feel even worse is knowing I won't be getting anymore calls from him saying "Can you pick me up at nine and we will go see the guys for breakfast".
Most of all, David he loved you so much and always looked forward to spending time with you on the boat at the Marina, that David, was something that really made him happy.
I will miss you Howie and it was an honor and a pleasure to have been part of your life. Thank you!!!!!
Love,
RITCHIE

I'm so sad to hear of Howard's passing. My gosh what joy he brought to kids of my generation, as a tv and voice actor especially. I'm just now truly realizing the cumulative effect of his influence on my sense of humor, as his voice and comic timing and talent came at us from so many different angles during the 60's and 70's when I was coming up.
I also came across a lotta Ernest T Bass type guys growing up in the deep south during that time period (including several in my extended family) and I always loved the way Howard made the character so human and not just a caricature of some of our more manners-challenged hillbilly brethren. : ) Ernest T had so much heart under that crazy firecracker temper that you just had to root for him.
High Anxiety and With Six You Get Eggroll are also two of my alltime favorite movies, and I could just go on and on about the other great work he was involved with that really helped shape my own comic timing as a writer. But I think I'll just say thank you SO MUCH Howard for everything, you were the best.

i just wanted to express my gratitude to God for the life of Howard Morris. I was always so impressed and entertained by the goofy, but loveabe, Enrnest T. Bass. I know that he was also a great director. I'm so glad that God created him in that wonderful way that he was created and that his performances were indeed works of art...just as any other mastepiece. He understood the quirks that make up people and when he brought these out to the open, it made us all melt inside and just sigh in unison with one big, "Ahhhh"
Mr David Morris, thank you for sharing these words with fans in a time which must be very difficult. Thank you for not being selffish and knowing that in a strange way, your father belonged to all us.
Be well and know that my prayers are with you during this time of grief. I feel that your dad is up there in heaven entertaining the angels and he has them all rolling in the aisles!

As an associate producer on the Garfield Cartoon series, I had the priviledge of working with Howard, who was the voice of Wade the Duck in our US Acres segments. My fondest memories are of Howard and Lorenzo Music, the voice of Garfield having a field day of comedic lines back and forth. Unfortunately, all of these were not on mic and usually over lunch. It made for a side splitting working enviroment. In other words, a joy. My condolences to Howard's family. He will be missed.

I am so sad for you David but I am filled with all the wonderful memories of what Howie has meant to me. I am an animator you see and he was such a dominant force in animation. Equal to Mel Blanc , June Foray and Daws Butler. That would have been a wonderful accomplishment alone but of course , he was so much more. Ernest , Uncle Nutsy , Schmidlapp ... my god , I can see myself in the theater , I must have been 10 and Howies as Schmidlapp saying "Is she taking a .... bath" ? No one could have done that like Howie, no one.
Howie was something more than a star , he was show businesses most unsung talent and a character actor who had an unbelievable list of characters backed by incredible timing. It is easy to see why he was so loved by his peers. I mourn your loss but I totally celebrate the gift of joy he has left us.

It was with great sadness that I read of Mr. Morris' passing this evening. Yet how fortunate that he will live on in the wonderful reruns we're able to see. Continuing to bring a smile to the faces of generations to come.
There are many thoughts and prayers surrounding the Morris family. Please count mine among them.

It was great sadness that I read about the passing of your father, Howard Morris. Your dad was one of the funniest people I have ever seen on TV. I remember him most of all as Ernest T. Bass on the Andy Griffith Show.
Your dad had a wonderful career and has touched the heart of so many of us over the years. He will be missed!

very sad to hear of your dad's passing. he was a special part of our house (having never met him but loving his work) for years. thinking of him hanging onto sid caeser's suit, or the mel brooks story about your dad saying goodbye to his father as he tried to spread ashes on a particularly windy day! priceless!
and of course his amazing and indelible "ernest t"
Mr Morris was a part of all of our childhoods in a way, as we grew up watching those wonderful comedians and now, as we sadly lose them one by one. thank god for film and dvd. we can watch these timeless performances forever!
i would like to talk to you David about a book i'm putting together: not now, of course, but someday when you're up to it, please write to me so that i can tell you about this wonderful book of memories to which i'd love to add your father.
for now, the condolences and prayers of millions of fans - most you'll never meet- go out to you and your family at this sad time. Long live "Howie" Morris!

As sad as I am that Howard Morris has passed on, I prefer to dwell on the smile he ALWAYS brings to my face and my heart. There is a little spot in my heart with his name on it. What a joy he was, is and always will be. I am SO happy I got to see him perform. I am the lucky one.

I'm so sorry for your loss, David. I will remember your dad for more than just TAGS (though he was brilliant) and especially for his directing of one of my favorite comedy films (With Six You Get Eggroll); as well as many terrific episodes from some of the classic television series of our times. We'll all miss the great Howard Morris......a truly wonderful man.
