Howard Morris (Sept. 4, 1919 -May 21, 2005)
May 22nd, 2005 at 12:17pm

Dear friends,
I have extremely sad news to report of my dear father, Howard, who suddenly passed away the afternoon of May 21, 2005.

He was without a doubt the most amazing father.

In show business, Howard Morris "the star" was one in a trillion, a true genius, and an entertainment dynamo. So many "greats" in this business followed his career with incredible admiration and respect. I for one am one of his biggest fans!

The Andy Griffith Show became a major part of my father's life. He appeared in only five episodes. Regardless, he made a permanent impression on so many people, and was always amazed by and grateful for all of the love and support his fans gave to him.

I shared with Howard every bit of mail that came in, so I know firsthand how important your cards, emails, and gifts were to him over the years.

All I can really say now is that I miss him beyond words.

Thank you for being there!

Sincerely,
David Morris

David,

We are truly saddened by the loss of your Dad. We had the pleasure of meeting him at several Mayberry Days events and working a little behind the scenes giving us a chance to spend a little extra time getting to know him and enjoy his wonderful sense of humor. He obviously enjoyed entertaining the fans as Ernest T. but he really delighted in discussing his many other acting and directing roles. He was especially thrilled when I purchased an old theatre press kit for "Boys' Night Out" from 1962 in which he played a timid accountant opposite Patti Page as his wife, with Jim Garner, Kim Novak, and Tony Randall. He was very gracious in autographing the kit for me and while looking at Kim's photo, he paused, looked at me and said, "That Kim Novak was REALLY SOMETHING - remind me to tell you some stories later!" Sadly I didn't get to hear those "stories", but am very thankful to have had the pleasure to know him not only as Ernest T. - the incredibly talented and gifted entertainer, but also as "Howie", a truly personable man who never failed to bring a smile to one's face. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. God Bless.

So sad to hear of Mr. Morris' passing.  My husband and I got to see him at 3 of the Mayberry Days we were at, and he still was at his best being Ernest T.  He will be missed.  Our sympathy to the family, who I'm sure will miss him.

David, please know you and your family have my condolences.  Your father was an amazing man.  I'm not sure many people know the scope of his career, or that he was one of Sid Caesar's regulars on "Your Show of Shows."  I grew up watching "Atom Ant" and Jughead on "Archie" and had no idea he did those voices. I'll still think of him as Ernest T. though and I can just hear him now saying "How do you do Mrs. Wiley."

I met Howard at a Mayberry celebration at the Oak Mountain Ampitheatre near Birmingham, Alabama in 2000.  I regret I didn't get to shake his hand or get his autograph (his line was way too long) but I did say "hi" to him and got a "hi" back.  It was a thrill to meet him.

Hello everyone. This is Kim Morris, Howard's eldest daughter. I am new to the site; but due to Dad's passing I thought it important for me to also add my thanks to you along with my brother, David, for all of your wonderful support of my father you have given over the years. Howie was one of a kind, for sure, and through think and thin, we kids (4 in all) always knew we were loved. Again, thank you all for your support and well-wishes.

Peace be with you all, Kim Morris(Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register)

My memories of Howard Morris will never be replaced by his passing.  His timely and zany humor on the Sid Ceasar shows will never be forgotten.

I will always remember his brillant comedic zaniness and spontaneity.  His passing does not deter the warmth of my memories about him although I am too young to have seen many of his performances back in the 1950's and 1960's.

My deepest sympathies to all of his family.

How best to remember Howard Morris?

- Signing the 3 Stooges up for the Payroll Savings Plan?
- Dressing a "German General"?
- An emotional wreck on "This Is Your Story"?
- Wielding a sledgehammer on a Bavarian clock turntable?
- Breaking windows in Mayberry NC?
- Entertaining us with a song as Jet Screemer?
- Singing a Broadway tune at Mayberry Days?
- Shaking my hand, signing an autograph, graciously accepting my "thank you" for your good work, and posing for a photo?

The answer is, "All of the above."  And so much more.

Rest in peace Mr. Morris.  You were a talent, a gentleman, and a friend to us all.

Love and regards,
Brent

David -

We are very saddened to hear of your father's passing.  Please take comfort in the knowledge that his talent will continue to be enjoyed by millions for generations to come.

We were fortunate to meet your father at the Mayberry event in New Castle, Indiana a couple of years ago.  He graciously signed autographs, posed for photos, and spoke with fans for hours that weekend.  And at the reunion show, even at his advanced age, he held the audience absolutely captive as he made his entrance from the back of the auditorium while tossing rubber "rocks" at the delighted fans.  It was hysterical!

May God bless and comfort you and your family during this difficult time.

To David and Kim Morris, his family and all the hearts Howie brought joy to over the years, I add my condolences. I have an additional burden of sadness in that I was just beginning to appreciate the dimensions of Howard Morris' immense talent when I discovered this website and the forums. I recall watching "Your Show Of Shows" reruns late Saturday evenings in the 70s when I first really took notice of the name.
Later, as a struggling radio performer and would-be voice actor, I incorrectly assumed some higher-pitched male voices in Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the sixties were done by Don Messick. Upon listening closer, and digesting more information on the subject, I again see the name "Howard Morris." BOING!
OK, it all becomes clearer. It's apparent that the voices for Ernest T. and H-B's Mushmouse are "kin" to one another (with important differences, of course). As someone who gravitates toward character actors who excel at playing hillbillies, wildmen or both, I find a lot to love about Howie. But there's so very much more. And I, for one plan on digging further into the wonderful legacy of his work. My only regret is not having a chance to see Mr. Morris work on stage and/or meet him face-to-face. Alas, he was a true iconoclast and obviously a very sweet man. May he rest peacefully.

With love,

David, Kim and family,

Thank you for sharing your dad with the world.  May you be comforted in knowing that millions of fans join you in mourning this great loss.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.  We fans of TAGS are blessed that Howard made us feel like family as well.  We know that his marvelous career lives on and his legacy is secure.  One of life's greatest gifts is the ability to bring a smile, Howard had a double helping of that gift!  Here's to the decades of joy from Your Show of Shows to TAGS and beyond.  To borrow from Bob Hope...thanks for the memories!

David,
I was so sad when I read on IMDB of your father's passing. I've been a big fan of his all my life. Not only his apperences as Ernest T., but his work with Sid Caesar, voice work on Hanna Barbara, like Grandpa Jetson, and many guest star appearences like his role as Holdecker on The Dick Van d**e Show episode called The Masterpiece. I also loved most of the movies he directed. I just bought "With Six You Get Egg Roll" a couple of weeks ago, and I hope that Sony will one of these days put "Who's Minding the Mint", which is a film that I so love that I even have the comic book adaptation of it. I remember a guest stint he did on Mary Tyler Moore's variety show where he played an actor who was suppose to play a waiter. But he wanted to make he's one line funny, instead of saying "Here's you soup", he said "Here's your zoooup". He could always make me laugh.

I also loved his work for Mel Brooks, in "Life Stinks" when his chartacter Sailor mentions he wanted a viking funneral. I lost it. As I had heard Mel Brooks tell the story of your Grandfather's funneral, and how when your father went to throw the ashes into the Hudson river the ashes were blown back at him. I said only Mel Brooks would make Howard Morris relive that event as his own father. My favorite role of your father's for Brooks was in "High Anxiety". He was wonderful as Professor Lillolman.

I wish I had found this site before he died. I would love to have let him know how much I loved his work. I even have the poster of "Boys Night Out", which has him on the poster in my hallway. A perfect comedian, and actor.

Here was a man who entertained people from all walks of of life from all over the world as the often imitated but never duplicated Ernest T. Bass. Now I freely admit being partial to that character (and boy was he a character!), but I have also seen Mr. Morris in several other parts thru the years and was always amazed at his chameleon-like ability to become most anyone at all and play them believably. Did you catch that, Ernest T.? Care to spell it for Miss Crump? UH-BILL-UH-TEE... Wink

Sincere condolences,

ModGirl
